The new Volkswagen Amarok has been priced for Australia.
With a starting price of $50,990 before on-roads, the starting price has risen by $5100 for 2023 – although the new Amarok promises to be a much safer, higher-tech proposition than its venerable predecessor.
Three engines will be offered: a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder (in two states of tune), a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6, and a 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
The 2.3-litre petrol engine is unique to the Amarok relative to the Ford Ranger with which it shares its platform.
Volkswagen will offer five trim levels: Core, Life, Style, PanAmerica, and Aventura.
High-end Aventura and PanAmericana models will hit Australia first towards the end of the first quarter of 2023, with lower-end models to follow.

Engines
The entry-level TDI405 engine in the Amarok is a 2.0-litre single-turbo four-cylinder diesel making 125kW of power and 405Nm of torque. It’s sent to the road through a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, along with a 4Motion four-wheel drive system with selectable 2H, 4H, and 4L modes.
The TDI500 has a bi-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel making 154kW of power and 500Nm of torque, mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive.
The TDI600 packs a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 diesel making 184kW of power and 600Nm of torque, mated with a 10-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive.
The only petrol options is the TSI452, which is a turbocharged 2.3-litre petrol engine making 222kW of power and 452Nm of torque. It’s mated with a 10-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive.
Fuel Economy
Final fuel economy numbers of the Amarok haven’t been published for Australia. In the closely-related Ford Ranger, the TDI405 uses 8.0 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.
The TDI500 uses a claimed 7.2 litres per 100km, and the TDI600 uses a claimed 8.4 litres per 100km.
All models will have an 80L fuel tank, and TDI models now have a 19.3L AdBlue tank instead of the 6.3L unit on the outgoing car.
Dimensions
The new Amarok measures 5350mm long, up 96mm on the previous model. It has a 3270mm wheelbase, and is 1910mm wide and and 1888mm tall.
Braked towing capacity is up to 3500kg and there’s a 6500kg gross combined mass. Payload is up to 1200kg depending on model.
Fording depth has increased from 500 to 800mm and thanks to the now-shorter overhangs, the front angle of approach figure is now 29 degrees, the departure angle is 21 degrees, and the ramp angle is 21 degrees.
Servicing and Warranty
The Amarok is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty like the wider Volkswagen range.
Service prices haven’t been confirmed.
Safety
The new Amarok hasn’t been crash-tested by Euro NCAP or ANCAP.
The related Ford Ranger has a five-star safety rating, suggesting the same is likely for the Amarok.
