The 872-HP Polestar 5 Will Have An Advanced LiDAR System

The forthcoming all-electric Polestar 5 will feature an advanced LiDAR system as part of an expanded partnership with Luminar.

Polestar says the expanded partnership will allow it to collaborate on the industrial design and integration of Luminar’s 3D laser scanning technology. Already, Luminar will supply the Polestar 3 with its LiDAR technology and orders for a LiDAR-equipped Polestar 3 are already being accepted before the first deliveries start in 2024.

“Luminar is at the forefront of long-range LiDAR technology and this closer collaboration will allow for greater innovation in our cars to come,” Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath said. “We look forward to combining our R&D and product design expertise to deliver truly stunning LiDAR integration and capabilities for the Polestar brand.”

The Polestar 5 will be a four-door GT with a design inspired by the Precept concept from 2020. The EV will feature an 800-volt architecture and sport a pair of electric motors combining to deliver 872 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. While the Swedish automaker has not yet revealed how quick the 5 will be, it will comfortably be its most powerful vehicle and likely hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in the low-3 second range, if not even quicker.

Underpinning the 5 will be a bonded aluminum platform that was developed in-house by Polestar’s R&D team in the UK. Polestar says this structure is lightweight and rigid and will help to improve efficiency, range, safety, and dynamics of the sedan.

“As we successfully execute together, Polestar’s conviction in Luminar and the value of our technology has continued to accelerate,” founder and chief executive of Luminar, Austin Russell added. “With this new expanded partnership and our shared pioneering spirit, we will push the boundaries of automotive technology and design into new territories for the next generation.”
